Bula is an oil place first and a port second. On the eastern tip of Seram in Maluku, it has been tied to petroleum since 1897, when the seventh oilfield in Indonesia was found here; today the concession operated by Kalrez Petroleum yields only around 212 barrels of crude a day (2021). Cargo handling takes place at an open roadstead serving the onshore fields, with no container berths, international customs facilities or dangerous-goods liner services. As an exposed anchorage rather than a sheltered basin, working ships here depends on the weather. For regular freight or container shipping in the Moluccas, Ambon, about 300 km to the west, is the practical option.
