Two of Russia's great rail arteries — the Baikal–Amur Mainline and the Trans-Siberian — reach saltwater at Vanino, on the Strait of Tartary opposite Sakhalin Island. The deepwater natural bay handles coal, timber, metal products, general cargo and some bulk oil, with a dedicated coal terminal anchoring its export trade. Containers move through Vanino as well, though in modest volumes beside the bulk tonnage. The port is also the mainland end of the Vanino–Kholmsk rail ferry, the only fixed freight link to Sakhalin, crossing roughly 260 km of water.
