A 225-metre ore quay, water depths of about 10.5 metres and a ship loader rated up to 10,000 tonnes per hour define Buchanan (LR UCN), Liberia's principal iron-ore export port. Built in the 1960s by the Swedish-American LAMCO venture to ship ore from the Nimba Range, the port resumed exports in 2011 after ArcelorMittal Liberia rebuilt the 245-kilometre standard-gauge railway to its Tokadeh mine. A new material-handling terminal adds a rail-car dumper, stacker and reclaimers. Lying about 272 kilometres south-east of Monrovia, Buchanan is the country's second-largest port and is being opened to additional mining projects, including ore from the Guinean border zone. A separate quay handles commercial general cargo. For containers and mixed freight, however, the Freeport of Monrovia remains Liberia's main gateway.
