Live cattle, not container boxes, headline Broome's cargo book — the port ranked as Australia's second-largest livestock export gateway in 2025, shipping about 72,600 head, mainly to Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. Set on Roebuck Bay in the remote Kimberley of northern Western Australia, between Darwin and Port Hedland, it is above all a supply base for the offshore oil and gas industry of the Browse Basin (including Inpex). Alongside livestock and energy support, it handles mineral-sand bulk exports and serves pearling, fishing and cruise vessels. Container traffic is negligible at around 220 TEU a year, while imports centre on bulk fuel, cement, drilling mud and rig equipment. Hinterland connections rely entirely on the region's long-haul road network. Shippers with containerised or general breakbulk freight for Western Australia should route through Fremantle, and bulk cargoes through Port Hedland.
