At around 90,000 containers a year, Red Hook Container Terminal is a small, niche player within the Port of New York and New Jersey — and the only container terminal in New York City itself. It specialises in fresh and frozen perishables from South and Central America and the Caribbean, much of it tropical fruit on Seaboard Marine services, with container barges shuttling to New Jersey twice a week. Since May 2024 the terminal has been owned by New York City, which is investing USD 95 million including a new electric container crane. Breakbulk and bulk berths plus warehousing round out the facility. For mainstream deep-sea container services, the large New Jersey terminals — Port Newark, APM Elizabeth and Maher — are the alternatives.
