Brofjorden on Sweden's west coast is a single-purpose industrial port serving exclusively the Preem refinery Preemraff Lysekil — Sweden's largest refinery and one of the biggest in Northern Europe. The terminal is capable of berthing supertankers up to 500,000 DWT, making it one of the few European deepwater facilities able to receive Very Large and Ultra Large Crude Carriers (VLCC/ULCC). Annual crude throughput is approximately 22 million tonnes; cargo streams include crude oil inbound and refined products (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil) and LPG outbound. No general cargo handling takes place; the terminal is not accessible to outside forwarders. Preem is running the ICR project (Industrial Conversion and Renewal) from 2026 to 2029, upgrading the refinery to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other bio-derived co-processing products. Given Preemraff's role in Sweden's energy supply, no domestic alternative exists for this crude-handling function. The nearest general freight ports are Gothenburg for container and RoRo traffic, and Stenungsund for petrochemicals.
