If a shipment isn't crude oil or refined petroleum, Brofjorden is the wrong call: this deep natural harbour on Sweden's Skagerrak coast exists to serve Preemraff Lysekil, Scandinavia's largest refinery. The site was chosen for its depth — its crude berth takes supertankers of up to 500,000 DWT, alongside five product jetties handling tankers to about 80,000 DWT. Crude arrives by sea and refined and increasingly renewable fuels leave the same way, with no container, breakbulk or RoRo capability whatsoever. Handling around 22 million tonnes a year, Brofjorden ranks among Sweden's largest ports. Both the port and the roughly 11-million-tonne-per-year (220,000 bpd) refinery are owned by Preem, which in June 2025 commissioned a rebuilt Synsat unit that tripled renewable-fuel output to about 1 million m³ a year. Onward distribution relies mainly on product tankers along the North European coast, supplemented by pipelines and road. Forwarders moving general or containerised cargo should instead use Gothenburg or Wallhamn.
