Roll-on/roll-off traffic to Greece, Albania and the Western Balkans defines Brindisi far more than containers. This Puglian port is first and foremost a RoRo and ferry hub: Grimaldi Lines runs the core RoRo services, which moved more than 3 million tonnes of rolling cargo on around 96,000 truck-trailers in 2025. Brindisi is in structural transition — coal handling for the nearby power station fell to zero in 2024, pulling overall volumes down sharply, while the first nine months of 2025 saw over 4.4 million tonnes pass through. Alongside RoRo, the port retains liquid chemicals, gas, grain and breakbulk; container traffic is marginal, with the Terminal Container Brindisi handling only about 48,000 TEU in 2023 at low utilisation. Hinterland haulage is mainly by road, as rail freight in Puglia is limited. For regular container services or larger volumes, Taranto or Bari are the alternatives.
