At about 6.3 million tonnes in 2024, Bordeaux (FR BOD) ranks among France's largest seaports – and is overwhelmingly an energy and bulk port rather than a container gateway. Hydrocarbons account for roughly 50% of traffic (around 4 million tonnes a year through Ambès, mostly imports), while cereals and solid bulks grew strongly in 2024. Seven specialised terminals stretch more than 100 km along the Gironde estuary, from deep-water Le Verdon to Bassens near the city. Traffic eased slightly to about 6.18 million tonnes in 2025, while an investment programme toward 2030 aims to modernise the port. For scheduled container services, Le Havre, Montoir-Nantes or La Rochelle are the realistic alternatives.
