Boothbay Harbor grew in the 19th century into a busy centre for Banks fishing, shipbuilding and coastal trade — in 1827 some 2,125 vessels were recorded anchoring here in a single year. By the mid-20th century its economy had shifted decisively to tourism, and today lobster boats, windjammers, ferries and whale-watching craft fill a harbour with a channel of only about 4.9 metres. For commercial liner, container or breakbulk freight the port therefore has limited relevance and serves no routine cargo role. Containerised and general cargo for the region moves through Portland, Maine (International Marine Terminal), while dry bulk is handled at Searsport (Mack Point).
