Eight liquefaction trains, a design capacity of about 22.5 million tonnes per year and more than 10,000 cargoes shipped since 1977 place Bontang among the world's largest LNG export plants. Known today as Badak LNG and operated by PT Badak NGL, the complex on the Makassar Strait in East Kalimantan loads gas carriers bound chiefly for Japan, South Korea and Taiwan; declining feed gas means only three of the eight trains currently run. For forwarders the distinction matters: this is a specialised LNG terminal for gas tankers, not a container or general-cargo port, and it handles no general customs-cleared freight. Containerised and project cargo for the region moves instead through Balikpapan, Samarinda (Palaran) or Surabaya (Tanjung Perak).
