A crude loading platform and a cluster of single-point moorings anchored 13 to 16 nautical miles offshore define the Bonny Offshore Terminal, one of the export points for Nigeria's Niger Delta oil. Operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company, the facility loads tankers directly through submarine pipelines in deep water, which is why there is no conventional cargo quay. For freight forwarders the practical message is clear: this is a dedicated crude-oil export terminal with no container, breakbulk or RoRo handling and no general customs-cleared cargo role. The crude shipped here is Bonny Light, a light, low-sulphur (sweet) grade prized by refiners worldwide. Containerised and general cargo for the region moves instead through Onne (Federal Ocean Terminal) and the Lagos complex of Apapa, Tin Can Island and the Lekki Deep Sea Port. Bonny Island also hosts the separate Nigeria LNG export terminal for gas shipments.
