Phosphate built Port Boca Grande: from 1907 the Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railroad fed an automatic transloader that poured rock straight into ocean-going ships, and by 1969 this was Florida's fourth-busiest port. The rail link closed in 1979 and that trade ended; the quay on Charlotte Harbor now functions mainly as a petroleum terminal serving a Florida Power & Light plant. General cargo, container and customs services for ordinary forwarding are not confirmed here, with Gasparilla Island better known today for tarpon fishing.
