Reefer fish, shrimp and lobster outbound, timber alongside them, with general cargo and fuels inbound – that is the modest trade of Bluefields (NI BEF) on Nicaragua's Caribbean coast. The sheltered port works a single Ro-Ro berth plus a private wharf at a fish cannery, and its 4.5-metre channel limits it to smaller vessels; it is a fishing and multipurpose port rather than a container gateway. The wider system also includes El Rama on the Escondido river and El Bluff at the bay entrance. A deep-water port at Bluefields has been announced since 2022 but is not yet built. For containerised cargo to Nicaragua, the Pacific port of Corinto – the country's only container port – remains the main option.
