Unlike the container quays upriver at Bassens, Blaye (FR BYE) on the right bank of the Gironde estuary is a dedicated bulk terminal handling close to 290,000 tonnes a year: cereals out, liquid bulks in. It is one of seven sites making up France's Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux, which stretches some 100 kilometres from the estuary mouth to the city. Grain from the Aquitaine hinterland is exported through SEMABLA's silo of about 90,000 tonnes capacity, while liquid bulk oils, chemicals and bitumen are landed. A reinforced quay rated at 18 tonnes per square metre lets Blaye take heavy and oversized parcels. Road and rail link the terminal to its catchment, while the tidal fairway demands careful draught planning. Forwarders with containers or larger breakbulk route them through Bassens instead.
