Pertamina subsidiary Perta Arun Gas runs Blanglancang (ID BLL) as an energy port on the Strait of Malacca, about 10 kilometres from Lhokseumawe in Aceh – an LNG and gas facility, not a container terminal. For decades its single- and multi-buoy moorings plus harbour berths shipped condensate, LPG and liquefied natural gas from the Arun field across six LNG trains. When feed gas ran out in 2014 the export terminal closed and Arun was rebuilt as an LNG import facility, taking its first cargo from BP's Tangguh project in 2015 and later adding a bonded logistics centre. It now works with around 3 million tonnes of annual import capacity and five LNG tanks; the LNG berths handle tankers up to 290 metres long at 12.5 metres draught. Two small multipurpose berths take limited general cargo, but the port is not set up for containers. Plans aim to grow Arun into a regional LNG hub for Sumatra and beyond, with Indonesia–South Korea talks held in 2024. Containerised and conventional breakbulk for northern Sumatra moves through Belawan near Medan, some 270 kilometres west.
