Opened in 1900, Bird Port has grown into the busiest dock on the River Usk and the only under-cover port on Britain's west coast. Sitting just east of Newport in south Wales, it specialises in steel, timber and loose bulk cargoes and moves up to 800,000 tonnes a year. A double set of Goliath gantry cranes spans the dock and more than 160,000 sq ft of covered storage protects high-value steel from the weather, complemented by the UK's only covered rail link of its kind. The facility is owned by SIMEC Infrastructure, part of Sanjeev Gupta's GFG Alliance, which also runs the freight operator Cargo Services (UK), timber merchant Wm. Shapland & Sons and haulier Ryan Transport. Hinterland reach combines road and the covered rail siding, while shippers needing container or liner services can turn to neighbouring Newport Docks (ABP), Cardiff or Avonmouth/Bristol across the Severn.
