Maersk began calling weekly at the Port of Big Creek (BZBGK) in April 2026 on a direct service from Panama, giving Belize's only deep-water port its first predictable container link. Located in the Stann Creek District in the south of the country, the facility offers three berths totalling 618 metres: Berths 1 and 2 at 305 metres each (max 230 m LOA) and Berth 3 at 213 metres (max 180 m LOA), behind a fully buoyed 4,205-metre entrance channel and turning basin dredged to 11 metres. Bananas shipped for Fyffes and raw sugar from ASR Belize Sugar Industries and the Santander Sugar Group make up the bulk of exports, alongside citrus, shrimp and crude oil from the Spanish Lookout field. Annual throughput runs at roughly 200,000 export tonnes and 50,000 import tonnes across about 50 vessel calls. The ISPS-certified terminal handles dry bulk, reefer cargo, liquid bulk, breakbulk and grain, and provides stevedoring, ship agency and tug-and-barge services. Shippers needing larger container volumes or transshipment access typically route via Belize City (BZBZE, approx. 160 km north) or Puerto Barrios, Guatemala (approx. 100 km south).
