Gujarat's Gulf of Khambhat coast is best known here for Alang, the world's largest ship-recycling yard a short distance south, whose steel and equipment flows shape the economy around Bhavnagar. Bhavnagar port itself is small: silting forced the abandonment of the original site, and a newer lock-gated port was built to take larger vessels. It mainly handles general and bulk cargo, while strong tidal currents in the Gulf of Khambhat and the monsoon make anchoring and approach demanding. There is no verified role as an international container port. Since the Hong Kong Convention on safe ship recycling entered into force on 26 June 2025, more than 100 Alang yards hold compliance certificates, even as demolition volumes have fallen sharply of late. Road and rail links tie the port into industrial Gujarat. For containers and larger volumes, the nearby deep-water ports of Mundra and Pipavav are the relevant alternatives.
