About 125,000 tonnes of cargo and some 10,000 passengers pass through Beypore each year, ranking it second among Kerala's state ports after Cochin. Set at the mouth of the Chaliyar in Kozhikode district, midway between Cochin and New Mangalore, it works mainly as a coastal and island-supply port, with furniture, timber and seafood among its exports and a steady passenger and freight link to the Lakshadweep Islands. Cargo crosses an open roadstead, so the shallow approaches rule out deep-sea container ships. The port is administered by the Kerala Maritime Board and is famous for the handcrafted wooden uru dhows still built on its riverbanks. Road and rail toward Kozhikode handle the hinterland. For container boxes, international general cargo or customs clearance, shippers turn to Cochin's Vallarpadam terminal or to New Mangalore. Beypore's strength lies in regional and Lakshadweep trade rather than mainline shipping.
