Grain, malt, timber, stone and cement define the cargo mix at Berwick-upon-Tweed, the second-largest port in Northumberland. Its Tweed Dock, set behind tide gates at the mouth of the River Tweed, offers three berths totalling 300 metres and handles vessels up to roughly 115 metres and 3,000 dwt at about 4.7 metres of depth. The port moves on the order of 150,000 tonnes a year across some 250 ship movements, with wheat and barley exported to Germany and Denmark and cement traded both ways, including shipments to Shetland and Orkney. Hinterland access runs via the A1 trunk road and the nearby East Coast Main Line. Berwick is not equipped for container or international general-cargo services, for which Blyth or Leith are practical alternatives. Forwarders use it selectively for regional dry-bulk and breakbulk parcels.
