A member of the Hanseatic League back in the 15th century, Bermeo remains the most important fishing port in the Basque Country and a centre of tuna canning known as the world tuna capital. Alongside the fleet, it has built up a commercial trade in steel, paper, aluminium, processed wood pulp and palletised goods, with a niche in project cargo and heavy lifts. Containerised liner services are not part of the picture; that role belongs to Bilbao, roughly 20 nautical miles away. A quay depth of just under 5 m keeps calls to smaller breakbulk and specialised vessels. Road links connect the port to the Basque industrial belt around Bilbao. Shippers needing container, reefer or larger bulk capacity turn to Bilbao or Pasajes.
