Eleven kilometres of quays, four cold stores and thirteen shore-power points for offshore vessels define Bergen, Norway's second-largest port. In 2024 it handled around 439,000 tonnes of cargo and just over 31,000 TEU — figures that mark it as a regional multipurpose port rather than a container giant. Since 1965 it has served chiefly as a supply base for the North Sea offshore oil industry, with dozens of supply vessels working the Puddefjord. Beyond that, it handles breakbulk, Ro-Ro, liquid bulk and offshore containers, and acts as a hub for ferries, fishing and passengers. Its reefer capacity makes it an important outlet for fish and seafood. Hinterland reach is mainly by road; western Norway lacks a continuous freight railway to the port. For large-scale container liner traffic Oslo is the better fit, while Stavanger/Tananger is the alternative for offshore logistics. As a supply, fishing and breakbulk port for western Norway, however, Bergen is central.
