Around 500,000 TEU a year now move through Berbera since DP World lifted annual capacity from roughly 150,000 TEU, with a planned second phase set to extend the quay toward 1,000 m and raise capacity to about 2 million TEU. The deep-water container terminal offers about 400 m of quay, three ship-to-shore gantry cranes, eight rubber-tyred gantries and up to 17 m draft for larger boxships. Cargo is dominated by containers, breakbulk and consumer and project imports bound for Somaliland and, increasingly, landlocked Ethiopia. Via the Berbera Corridor road to Addis Ababa, the port markets itself as an alternative to Djibouti for Ethiopian transit traffic. There is no rail link, so hinterland haulage is by truck. In October 2025 DP World launched a new direct Jebel Ali–Berbera service, tightening the link to its Dubai hub. Its Gulf of Aden position places it close to the Bab-el-Mandeb and the main Asia–Europe lane. For volumes Berbera cannot absorb, Djibouti and Doraleh remain the nearest large container alternatives.
