Operated around MOL Ferries' Sunflower services, Beppu in Oita Prefecture on Kyushu is first and foremost a Ro-Ro ferry and cruise port rather than a container terminal. The Sunflower line links Beppu with Osaka in about twelve hours, carrying vehicles, accompanied freight and passengers aboard vessels such as the 2023-built Sunflower Murasaki and Kurenai. As the principal cruise port of Oita Prefecture, it also receives visitors drawn to the city's famous hot springs. Anchorage depths exceeding 23 metres allow large vessels, but scheduled container liner traffic is minimal here. For containerised or industrial cargo, nearby Oita is the better option, with Hakata or Kitakyushu handling larger box volumes.
