Reefer boxes, fuel parcels and cruise gangways share the quay at Belize City (BZ BZE), the country's primary commercial seaport. Roughly 95 to 98 percent of Belize's imports and exports move across this port, run by Port of Belize Ltd. and back in state ownership since 2023. Along about 750 m of berth it handles some 44,000 to 45,000 TEU a year, served by two dockside and two mobile cranes, transtainers and a reach stacker. Twelve reefer points and cold storage support temperature-controlled cargo, while fuel tanks back the energy supply chain. As an open roadstead with shallow approaches, the port often has larger ships lighter their cargo offshore. Since returning to state ownership, infrastructure upgrades and a new bulk terminal are planned. Tropical Shipping, King Ocean and Crowley link it to the Caribbean, Central America and the US East Coast. For deeper draught and banana or citrus exports, Big Creek to the south is the alternative, with Santo Tomás de Castilla and Puerto Cortés serving the wider region.
