Northern Brazil's Amazon trade runs through Belém, capital of Pará state near the river's mouth — a versatile city port that handled around 1.7 million tonnes in 2024 rather than a deep-sea container hub. It belongs to the Companhia Docas do Pará (CDP) network, which runs eight ports across the state. Its Miramar terminal handles petroleum products, LPG and hydrous ethanol, while the nearby Outeiro terminal, geared to dry bulk and general cargo, was expanded under a roughly R$233 million programme completed in late 2025. Belém mainly moves general cargo, limited container volumes, fuels and regional supplies for the Amazon hinterland, with a channel restricted to around 9 metres. Inland reach depends on road and the waterways of the Amazon basin, where river barging matters more than rail. For large container or bulk flows — bauxite, alumina, soya — Vila do Conde at Barcarena, 55 km away, is the first choice, while Santarém serves the upper Amazon. Belém itself is a regional multipurpose and supply port.
