Few small Indian ports carry as charged a history as Belekeri, a minor harbour in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district about 30 km south of Karwar, once at the centre of an iron-ore export scandal. Loading happens at an open roadstead rather than a deepwater quay, with barges and chutes feeding bulk carriers at anchorage. The port is built around dry bulk – iron ore and manganese – backed by roughly 100 acres of stacking ground, with little to no container or breakbulk activity. After a long ban on iron-ore exports from Karnataka's non-major ports, a 2022 Supreme Court ruling and a 2025 state policy reopened the route for ore shipments. Private operators including Salgaocar, Tungabhadra Minerals and Adani have developed loading infrastructure here. For containerised or customs-heavy cargo, New Mangalore, Mormugao (Goa) or Karwar are the dependable alternatives.
