The Bejaia Mediterranean Terminal (BMT), a joint venture between the EPB port authority and Portek, anchors container handling at this north-east Algerian port (DZ BJA) with roughly 400,000 m² of yard, post-Panamax cranes and about 360 reefer points. Crude oil and petroleum products remain the leading exports, fed by a pipeline from the Hassi Messaoud fields to the breakwater harbour at the mouth of the Wadi Soummam. Bejaia is the only Algerian port licensed to handle dangerous goods, a status that makes it pivotal for chemical and DG consignments. A channel depth of about 13.7 m lets it work vessels up to the Supra-Panamax class, and throughput reached some 4.15 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2024. In April 2026 the port shipped a first export consignment of around 8,000 tonnes of locally produced goods, signalling growing non-oil trade. The Béni Mansour–Béjaïa railway and the A20 motorway carry cargo inland through the Soummam valley; for pure deep-sea container flows, Algiers and Djen Djen are the alternatives, with Skikda serving oil.
