Share a name with the French maize port and you invite confusion — but Bayonne, New Jersey is a different animal entirely. Operating under UN/LOCODE US BAY, Port Liberty Bayonne (formerly GCT Bayonne) is one of the most advanced container terminals on the US East Coast, part of the Port of New York and New Jersey. The 167-acre facility passed to ocean carrier CMA CGM with its 2024 acquisition of GCT's North American terminals; CMA CGM has announced roughly US$600 million to expand its NY/NJ terminals. Its 2,700-foot berth and 50-foot draft are served by eight post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes plus numerous semi-automated rail-mounted gantries and RTGs; in 2024 Liebherr raised four cranes by about 8.6 metres so the terminal can handle vessels up to 18,000 TEU. Immediately adjacent, IMTT operates a major liquid-bulk terminal with seven deepwater ship berths and eleven barge berths, plus rail and truck loading. The wider Port of NY/NJ moved about 8.9 million TEU in 2025, up 2.3 percent; hinterland reach runs via the I-78 and I-95 corridors and ExpressRail intermodal service. Customs and CBP clearance make US BAY a full-service container gateway for East Coast importers and exporters, with reefer and dangerous goods as core business. Shippers with breakbulk or pure dry-bulk parcels are better served at Port Newark-Elizabeth.
