Around 2.16 million tonnes crossed Bayonne's quays in 2025, up 2.3 percent on the year — and almost none of it in containers. France's leading maize-export port ships grain from the mouth of the Adour to Spain, moved largely by rail from the Maïsica group's on-dock silos. Fertilisers (handled by Roullier's TIMAC AGRO on the 17-hectare Tarnos terminal), sulphur from Lacq feeding ADISSEO at Blancpignon, and metallurgical products and timber round out the cargo mix. Operations spread across three specialised terminals: Tarnos for heavy industry, Saint-Bernard for industrial logistics and Blancpignon for storage. This is a dry-bulk, liquid-bulk and breakbulk river port, not a container gateway — shippers needing boxes, reefer slots or scheduled liner calls should route via Bordeaux or nearby Bilbao. A shallow channel of roughly 5 metres also caps vessel size. For project cargo and agricultural bulk out of south-west France, however, Bayonne remains a cost-effective option.
