Roughly 500 metres of berthing and a draught of up to 10.9 metres make Bay Bulls (UN/LOCODE CABBU) the closest ice-free deep-water port to the Grand Banks oilfields off Newfoundland. Pennecon operates the marine terminal, which serves offshore supply vessels working the Hibernia, Terra Nova and White Rose projects. Cargo handled includes offshore equipment, project loads and general cargo; the harbour also remains an active fishing port and a base for tour boats. The arterial highway links the site to St. John's, about 30 km north by road, and to the Donovans industrial area. For container and scheduled liner traffic, St. John's is the nearest alternative port. The sheltered, naturally deep fjord stays open year-round.
