Often called Norway's fisheries capital, Båtsfjord (UN/LOCODE NO BJF) on the Varanger peninsula in Finnmark is one of the largest fishing ports in Norway and Scandinavia, its economy turning on cod, herring and increasingly king crab landed from the Barents and Norwegian seas. Several thousand fishing vessels call each year at its sheltered, ice-free waters. It is also one of the few Norwegian ports still open to Russian fishing vessels, whose catches are cleared through customs here before entering local processing — Russian cod has at times accounted for around half of one cold-storage facility's throughput. Beyond fishing, the port handles reefer, coastal and feeder cargo, bulk and breakbulk for regional supply, plus offshore service work and Hurtigruten coastal calls. There is, however, no conventional containerised liner service. For general container and breakbulk shipments Kirkenes, Hammerfest and Tromsø are the practical alternatives, so for forwarders Båtsfjord matters above all for seafood logistics and reefer flows.
