At roughly 73 million short tons in 2023, Baton Rouge (UN/LOCODE US BTR) is the eighth-largest US port and the furthest-inland point on the Mississippi that ocean-going Panamax ships can reach before barge traffic takes over. The cargo mix is overwhelmingly bulk and energy: petroleum, chemicals, grain, sugar, coal, coke and fertilizers lead, alongside steel, pipe, lumber, and forest and biomass products. Its export grain elevators are fed by barge, rail and truck, while refineries and chemical plants line the adjacent river corridor and anchor the port's industrial role. Class I railroads and interstate highways extend its reach inland. An ongoing deepening of the Gulf-to-Baton Rouge channel from 45 to 50 feet is set to raise vessel load capacity. Containers, however, are marginal here, so box shipments are routed through New Orleans and the Gulf deep-sea terminals.
