From 1852 to 1861 Bath ranked as the fifth-largest port in the United States, but today this Kennebec River site in Maine (UN/LOCODE US BTH) is a naval shipyard rather than a freight harbour. Bath Iron Works, a General Dynamics yard employing more than 6,500 people, has built warships for the US Navy for over a century and has not delivered a commercial vessel since 1984; its current work includes Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, among them the first Flight III ship USS Louis H. Wilson Jr. (DDG 126), christened in 2025. There is no container, bulk or breakbulk terminal for ordinary freight, so for forwarders the port's cargo relevance is minimal. Regional ocean freight is handled instead at Searsport (Mack Point) for bulk and project cargo and at Portland for containers. Bath is best understood as a specialised shipbuilding location, not a trading port.
