Around 5.39 million tonnes pass through Basuo (Dongfang) each year, moved across 1,412 metres of quays that can berth six 10,000-dwt vessels and two smaller ships at once — more deep-water berths than any other port on Hainan. The multipurpose port is firmly bulk-oriented: imports centre on coal, steel, cement, fertiliser, sugar and grain, while minerals, silica sand, ore and general cargo head outbound, including iron ore from the Shilu mine. A dedicated 50,000-dwt coal terminal supplies the Huaneng Dongfang power plant. Since 2018 the port has sat within the Hainan Free Trade Port pilot, easing customs and trade handling, and it is being developed into an energy and chemical hub oriented towards Southeast Asia. Containerised cargo, however, is concentrated at Hainan's Haikou and Yangpu terminals. Forwarders should treat Basuo as a dry-bulk and breakbulk port rather than a box gateway.
