The St. Christopher Air & Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) operates Basseterre's Deep Water Harbour (UN/LOCODE KNBAS), the main cargo port of St. Kitts and Nevis with a throughput of roughly 30,000 TEU per year. Two cargo berths accept vessels up to about 900 ft (270 m) with a draught of around 27 ft. Imports centre on consumer goods, building materials, vehicles and refrigerated containers supplying the twin-island federation; the terminal offers container storage, reefer points and about 175,000 sq ft of transit-shed warehousing. Customs clearance takes place at the port, and as a CARICOM member the country applies the community's common external tariff. Road connections cover the whole of St. Kitts within about an hour's drive, while Nevis is served by sea. Cruise traffic uses the separate Port Zante pier, keeping cargo operations clear of passenger flows. For larger transhipment volumes, regional hubs such as San Juan or Pointe-à-Pitre serve as alternatives.
