Sacks of milled rice moving from delta mills onto coasters and small bulk carriers capture the working reality of Bassein (Pathein), a long-standing rice-milling and export centre in the Irrawaddy delta. The river port sits about 121 km above the river mouth on the Bassein River, the westernmost distributary of the Irrawaddy, and is navigable by vessels up to roughly 10,000 tonnes. Numerous public and private jetties handle ships up to around 143 m length, 6.4 m draught and 13,000 dwt, with rice and rice products plus timber as the main cargoes. The newer Ayeyawady International Industrial Port (AIIP) loads rice, beans, corn and garments directly, including rice shipments to Bangladesh under a government-to-government agreement. There is no containerised liner service here, so for boxes and international consolidations Yangon, with its MITT and Thilawa terminals, is the relevant port. Forwarders should plan Bassein mainly for agricultural and breakbulk cargo on charter or feeder terms.
