Some 382 million pesos and years of construction have delivered a new, partly operational quay at Isabela City (PH BCT), the main gateway of Basilan province. On the island's north-west shore along the Basilan Strait near Malamaui, the port handles RoRo, passenger and fishing vessels with regular sailings to nearby Zamboanga City. Its export base is agricultural and forestry produce — timber and logs, rubber, copra pellets, plywood veneer and coconut oil. General-cargo ships, bulk carriers and tankers have historically called, but scheduled international container services are not confirmed. Road links serve the mountainous hinterland, while the sea route to the mainland remains the island's main artery; for containerised trade and customs, forwarders rely on Zamboanga City across the strait.
