Six operating berths, warehouses and a yard for technical vessels make up Basarabi (RO BAB), also known as Murfatlar, at kilometre 25 of the Danube–Black Sea Canal. This is an inland barge port rather than a seaport: it handles roughly 414,000 tonnes and around 840 vessel calls a year, mainly timber products, general and dry-bulk cargo, and agricultural goods from the surrounding Murfatlar wine region. No container traffic is handled here, and a usable depth of about 6.5 metres limits draught to between 5.5 and 6.5 metres. Road and rail link the port to Constanța a few kilometres away, where all maritime and customs clearance takes place. For containers, international liner cargo or sea-side customs, forwarders use the seaport of Constanța, with Medgidia as a nearby canal alternative for bulk.
