Owned and run by Associated British Ports, Barry is a specialist Welsh port on the Bristol Channel, a few miles southwest of Cardiff, geared to the chemical industry and conventional cargo rather than container liner trades. Its mainstay is liquid bulk serving UK chemicals, alongside steel, scrap metal, dry bulks, coal, cement, aggregates and regular Scandinavian and Baltic timber. Three docks accommodate vessels to around 23,000 DWT at roughly 9 m depth, backed by cranes, weighbridges and more than 14,000 m² of warehousing plus open storage. The port handles about 300,000 tonnes a year, with liquid bulk serving chemical customers such as Dow Silicones supported by around 45,000 m³ of Vopak tank storage, and is now planned as a Clean Growth Hub with px Group. Inland connections run via the South Wales road and rail network toward Cardiff and the M4 corridor. For containers, large RoRo volumes or deep-sea services, Bristol/Avonmouth, Newport or Cardiff are the better fits.
