In high summer, barges nose up to the beach at Barrow (Utqiagvik), the northernmost community in the United States, because there is no dredged channel or pier here — only an open roadstead about 9 metres deep. Seasonal sealift operators such as Alaska Marine Lines and Lynden run this service from roughly July to September, landing construction materials, vehicles, heavy equipment and bulk supplies once the sea ice retreats. No roads connect the town to the rest of Alaska, so year-round freight relies on air cargo or the hubs at Anchorage and Dutch Harbor. Commercial cargo relevance is limited to this specialised seasonal operation.
