With crude- and fuel-oil tank farms holding several million barrels and a main channel dredged to about 12.8 m, Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor is Oahu's specialised bulk and fuel port. It ranks as Hawaii's second-busiest commercial harbor and handles cargoes that Honolulu cannot: dry bulk through a coal unloader and a pneumatic cement pump, plus liquid bulk across dedicated fuel berths. The harbor is the inter-island distribution centre for finished petroleum products and is tied to the Par Hawaii refinery nearby. Its depth lets it work larger tankers and bulk carriers. Containers, reefer and general breakbulk, however, are routed through Honolulu Harbor about 30 km to the east. For neighbor-island bulk, Kahului and Hilo are the practical alternatives.
