Reachable by land only since the 1965 La Farola mountain road, Baracoa (UN/LOCODE CU BCA) is a small coastal harbour in far-eastern Cuba whose surrounding region grows around 75% of the country's cocoa and 70% of its coconuts. The circular natural harbour takes only small craft, with larger vessels anchoring (about 7 m) and working cargo by lighter; there is no container terminal and no rail link. Shipments centre on regional produce — cacao, coconuts, bananas and coffee — plus locally made chocolate and coconut oil. Founded in 1511 as Cuba's first Spanish settlement, the town stayed sea-dependent until the road to Santiago de Cuba (about 230 km) opened. For containers and general cargo the larger eastern ports of Santiago de Cuba and Moa (nickel and bulk) are better suited, while national box traffic runs through Mariel near Havana.
