Where many Adriatic ports lean on road feeders, Bar pairs its quays with the Bar–Belgrade railway, giving landlocked Serbia a direct rail outlet to the sea and anchoring its role as Montenegro's principal gateway. The port handled about 1.84 million tonnes in 2024, roughly three-quarters of the country's seaport cargo. Opened in 1906, the multipurpose port handles liquid and dry bulk, containers, RoRo cargo and timber alongside ferry and cruise traffic. Its container terminal was carved out in 2009 as Port of Adria, now run by Turkey's Global Ports group, while state-owned Luka Bar operates the rest; lines calling here include Maersk and MSC. In 2025 the port commissioned a new Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour crane, restoring container-handling capacity. For larger container volumes, Ploče in Croatia and Durrës in Albania remain practical alternatives.
