Anchoring the industrial north of Tunisia, the Banzart (Bizerte) port complex handles around five million tonnes a year — close to a fifth of the country's 27.75 million tonnes of maritime cargo in 2024 — as Africa's northernmost port. Run by the OMMP, it combines the city port of Bizerte with the Menzel Bourguiba industrial site on Lake Bizerte, reached through an access channel up to 17 m deep. Dedicated berths handle coal, ores, steel, zinc, cereals, cement and clinker, while containers remain a minor part of the traffic. A shipyard with four dry docks and a business park (former free zone) extend the site's industrial and distribution role. Road and rail link the port to Tunis and the northern manufacturing belt. Forwarders moving pure container loads generally route them via Radès near Tunis, which handles roughly 79% of Tunisia's containerised tonnage.
