Run today by Sunoco after years under Zenith Energy, the Bantry terminal on Whiddy Island in southwest Ireland is purely an oil business. Its 14 large and two smaller tanks hold over 1.4 million cubic metres — more than eight million barrels — of crude oil, gasoline, diesel and kerosene, part of it Ireland's strategic petroleum reserve. The deepwater approach makes it one of the deepest-draft terminals in Europe, able to take very large crude carriers. First built by Gulf Oil in the late 1960s, the site was scarred by the 1979 Betelgeuse tanker explosion that killed 50 people, after which it passed into state hands. It handles no containers, RoRo or general cargo; its freight role is confined to tanker shipping and storage. For containerised or breakbulk consignments, the nearest option is the Port of Cork at Ringaskiddy.
