Deepwater industrial jetties, dedicated bulk berths and a ferry ramp define Banten, a heavy-industry port complex in western Java near the city of Cilegon. The area groups the Ciwandan, Cigading, Merak and Anyer facilities under the state operator Pelindo. Its core trades are iron ore, limestone and other steelmaking raw materials feeding the Krakatau Steel works, alongside chemicals, ethylene, refined petroleum, cement and bulk wheat. With cargo berths dredged to around 14 metres, the complex handles large bulk carriers and tankers alongside. Merak additionally runs RoRo ferries to Bakauheni on Sumatra, making Banten a key link in Indonesia's domestic road-freight chain. Road and rail tie the surrounding West Java industrial estates to greater Jakarta. For conventional containerised cargo, Tanjung Priok in Jakarta remains the nearest liner port.
