For a country barely wider than its river, a single seaport carries nearly all overseas trade — and in The Gambia that port is Banjul. Operated by the Gambia Ports Authority, it sits on the Gambia River estuary where it meets the Atlantic. The container terminal offers roughly 300 metres of quay with gantry cranes and has handled on the order of 72,000 TEU, within total throughput approaching one million tonnes a year, about two-thirds containerised. Imports are dominated by food, fuel and machinery, while groundnuts and fishery products lead the export side. Ageing infrastructure and congestion constrain capacity, prompting planned expansion works. By road, Banjul also supplies the riverine interior and parts of Senegal's Casamance region. For larger volumes or transhipment onto intercontinental services, Dakar in neighbouring Senegal is the nearest alternative.
