Around 240,500 TEU and some 41.7 million tonnes of cargo move through Banjarmasin each year, making it the principal seaport of South Kalimantan on the Indonesian side of Borneo. Set about 16 nautical miles up the Barito and Martapura rivers, the port comprises the Trisakti, Martapura Baru and Martapura Lama terminals plus a Pertamina oil jetty. Trisakti handles containers, breakbulk and project cargo, while the dominant trade is coal: together with the offshore Taboneo anchorage, Banjarmasin loaded roughly 94.8 million tonnes of coal in 2023. Palm oil, rubber, timber and rattan are the other main exports, with spare parts and chemicals among the leading imports. Because the river channel is shallow, large bulk carriers are frequently loaded by lighter at Taboneo rather than alongside. Inland connections rely on road and an extensive river-barge network that feeds coal and agricultural commodities from the interior. For pure container shipments on global services, Tanjung Perak (Surabaya) remains the nearest major gateway.
