Despite being Brunei's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan (BN BWN) carries little commercial freight in its own right. It is a shallow river port on the Brunei River with around 4.9 m of channel depth and a royal wharf, suited to local and administrative traffic rather than international cargo. Brunei's containerised and general-cargo trade is concentrated at the Muara deepwater port (BN MUA) some 28 km to the north-east, whose terminal handles the country's only commercial box traffic at a capacity of about 220,000 TEU — a China-backed expansion to 500,000 TEU is due for completion by 2027. Forwarders shipping to Brunei should route through Muara and arrange onward road delivery to the capital.
